What to Bring to the NJ MVC (Permit, License and Road Test)

A checklist of what to bring to New Jersey MVC appointments, including 6 Points of ID, permits, BA-CSD forms and road test vehicle documents.

Arriving at the MVC without the right paperwork is the fastest way to lose an appointment. Use this checklist, then confirm the details for your specific transaction on the NJ MVC website.

6 Points of ID

New Jersey uses a 6 Points of ID verification system for permits and licenses. You'll need a combination of primary and secondary documents that add up to six points, plus proof of your Social Security number (or eligibility documentation) and proof of New Jersey address. Real ID has additional requirements. Use the MVC's online document selector to build your list.

For a teen special learner permit

  • 6 Points of ID documents and proof of address
  • Signed parent or guardian consent
  • Enrollment in an approved behind-the-wheel course; the driving school instructor purchases the permit
  • Glasses or contacts for the vision screening, if needed

For the road test

  • Your validated permit
  • Form BA-CSD (if you were permitted under 21 on or after February 1, 2025)
  • A road-ready vehicle with valid registration and insurance, or our road test car rental
  • A licensed driver to accompany you to the site if you're not using a driving school

For out-of-country license holders

Tips

  • Bring originals, not photocopies.
  • Make sure your name matches across documents, or bring proof of name change.
  • Arrive early, and check MVC location hours before you go.
Document rules change. Always verify with the NJ MVC before your visit.
