Master the highway.
Drive defensively.
North Jersey's highways are some of the busiest in the country. Learn to merge, change lanes and exit with confidence, and build habits that prevent crashes.

Highway skills
Bergen County drivers face short on-ramps on Route 17, jughandles on Route 4, toll plazas and fast traffic on the Garden State Parkway, and heavy trucks on I-80. We practice each of these deliberately, at off-peak times first.
- Matching speed and merging smoothly
- Lane selection, signage and early exit planning
- Safe following distance and blind-spot checks
- Sharing the road with trucks
Defensive driving habits
Defensive driving means anticipating others' mistakes: scanning far ahead, keeping an escape route, managing speed for conditions, and eliminating distractions. See our winter driving guide for seasonal tips.
